Usb To Ethernet Driver

I recently needed an Ethernet adapter for my laptop, which has USB and WiFi (of course) but no Ethernet. Somebody offered me an Apple USB-to-Ethernet adapter. I figured Windows would offer the driver automatically, after which I could use the computer in places where only wired networks were available.
Well, I plugged it in, and no such luck! Windows 10 Enterprise x64 recognized the hardware, but said it couldn't find a driver for it. I tried searching online (connected over Wi-Fi), and found a bunch of people referencing this page by somebody using the alias “Tnkgrl.” Unfortunately, the DropBox download link is no longer pointing to anything! I also searched Apple’s site, but couldn’t find any Windows drivers: Maybe they’re included in Bootcamp but not available for download?.
Anybody know how to get this device working in Windows?

I did a little more hunting online and found this link to a blog that said they'd found the driver for the chipset in the adapter, and convinced it to work. I followed a variant on their instructions, and it worked for me too. Here are the steps I used:
- Plug in the adapter while the computer is running.
- Check Device Manager (you can get there by right-clicking Start). You should see a listed Apple device with a little yellow exclamation mark next to it, saying Windows can't load the driver.
- Go to the website listed in the blog post and find the driver for your OS. I used this one for 64-bit Windows 10. Note that this is the actual driver download, not a Setup program.
- Download the .ZIP file. If you use a browser that adds the 'mark of the web' (IE or Edge for sure, maybe others), right-click the downloaded ZIP, go to Properties, click
Unblock
(either a button or checkbox), and hit OK. - Unpack the ZIP archive. You should see a folder containing four files: a .SYS file (the driver), a .CAT file (the WHQL signature), a .INF file (the driver information), and a Readme.txt. Don't do anything with these files directly, but remember where they are.
- Go back to Device Manager, right-click the device entry that needs the driver, and choose
Update Driver Software...
. - Choose

Have Disk...
button in the lower right, click it. Otherwise, click the top entry in the list (should be something like 'All devices') and hit OK, then clickHave Disk...
on the next screen. - In the box labeled 'Copy manufacturer's files from:', type in or browse to the location where you unpacked the .ZIP file, then hit OK.
- Choose the option
ASIX AX88772A USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter
(on my system, it is the second option listed). HitNext
. - You will get an 'Update Driver Warning' or similar saying that Windows can't verify that the driver will work with your hardware, which may cause problems. Click 'Yes' anyhow, for this and any other prompts to confirm that you want to install the driver.
- You should now have a working Ethernet adapter! In Device Manager, it will be listed as a 'ASIX AX88772A USB2.0 to Fast Ethernet Adapter' under the 'Network adapters' category, and there should be no exclamation marks or anything like that.
There you go! You can connect to a wired network, and it should work fine. The original instructions were for Windows 8 x64, and I can verify that it works on Win10 x64; I haven't tested it on other versions but the same steps should work and the download site lists drivers for tons of operating systems.
If you prefer to download the driver directly from Apple's site:
- Download the latest version of 'Boot Camp Support Software' from Apple.com: http://support.apple.com/downloads/#macoscomponents
- Open the ZIP file and go into the BootCampDriversAsix driver
- Run the AsixSetup64.exe driver installer
From Microsoft
search the windows update catalogWindows update catalog for ax88772
and get the driver from them.
Download the cab, extract it and install it using the device manager.It doesn't matter which 'name' you select - you get an warning that the driver will not fit - but they all work.
From Apple
Download the update catalog file using the official links:

Extract the xml file and open it in notepad++
Search for 'BootCampESD.pkg' (CTRL+F) and you will find many of them.
In the search result window double click the latest one and download the full url to the BootCampESD.pkg

Extract the *.pkg using 7-Zip:BootCampESD.pkgPayload~.LibraryApplication SupportBootCampWindowsSupport.dmg
Extract the *.dmg also with 7-zip: WindowsSupport.dmgBootCampDriversAsixAsixSetup64.exe
Extract the *.exe (rarsfx) again with 7-zip and you get the plain driver:
And yes, it still works also on Windows 10 x64

Update: A Windows 10 driver now exists for the USB2-E1000. However, it will not appear in the CD that comes with the adapter until the next lot of adapters is shipped. The updated driver can be downloaded from this link:

If you are not able to connect to the Internet without installing the driver, you can download it onto a flash drive on another computer and use that to install it.
In testing Plugable’s USB-Ethernet adapters with Windows 10, we were happy to discover they all work successfully when their drivers are properly installed. However, an installation problem could cause issues with the USB2-E1000.
Drivers are already built into Windows 10 for the ASIX AX88772 chip in our USB2-E100 and USB2-OTGE100 and the ASIX AX88179 chip in our USB3-E1000, USBC-E1000, and USB3-HUB3ME. When you insert these adapters into a USB port, the drivers are automatically installed with no need for an internet connection.
However, the driver for the ASIX AX88178 chip in our USB2-E1000 is not pre-installed in Windows 10, and we have discovered a problem with the downloadable driver that keeps it from installing. If this happens, the adapter will show up in Device Manager as “AX88178” with a Code 28 error: “”Drivers for this device are not installed.”
There are several ways to work around this issue, depending on the scenario:
1. Upgrading from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1: If you have already installed the driver for the USB2-E1000 in Windows 7 or 8.1 and upgrade directly from that version to Windows 10, the currently installed driver will be available to Windows 10, and your adapter should work without any further effort. If you haven’t yet installed this driver, please install it before upgrading. The easiest way is to establish an internet connection, either wirelessly or through another Ethernet port, then plug in the USB2-E1000. Windows Update should see it and automatically download the correct driver. You can also download and install the driver from our website or from the disk that came with your adapter.
2. Doing a clean install of Windows 10 or using the USB2-E1000 on a new Windows 10 computer: Since the previous Windows 7 or 8.1 driver will not be carried over to a clean install of Windows 10, it must be freshly installed. The only way to accomplish this is to have an internet connection available when you first plug in the USB2-E1000. That will allow Windows Update to download and install the driver. If you are in a situation where this is not possible, we recommend delaying the update until an internet connection is available, or until this issue has been fixed. Currently, the driver on the Plugable and ASIX websites is not working with Windows 10.
